Working with ThoraSteel
ThoraSteel is engineered for exceptional workability, making it an ideal choice for fabricators looking for strength without sacrificing ease of processing.

Bendability is Unmatched
“ThoraSteel is remarkably bendable” … according to our early adopting customers. Bends of 3 CLR with no deformations and smooth curves are common … even on thin-walled tube (1” OD x .049” WT). Some report achieving even more aggressive bends. The important factor is that these customers used high quality benders, most with internal mandrels.
Weldability is Equally Impressive
ThoraSteel is readily weldable using the same methods as the input materials … DoM (1020) or ChroMoly (4130).
Welders should minimize the heat input at each joint. Excess heat will not only create an enlarged HAZ but will also compromise ThoraSteel’s microstructure and reduce the optimum strength of the joint. Internal welding trials confirm that …
- Weld systems specifically designed to reduce heat input – like the Fronius Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) technology – provide a 25% increase in joint strength when compared with ‘traditional’ MIG-welded joints
- Laser welding systems – like the IPG Photonics LightWELD XR – provide a greater than 50% increase in joint strength when compared with ‘traditional’ MIG-welded joints
We recommend filler material with a high elongation.

General Workability Remains Straightforward
ThoraSteel can be drilled, punched and cut, same as the raw tube it was made from. The key is to recognize that ThoraSteel is significantly harder than the raw tube it was made from so selecting appropriate tools is important. Fabricators report success by using high-grade bits, punches, dies and blades while acknowledging accelerated wear on those tools.
For cutting, fabricators should be aware that laser-cuts leave a significantly smaller HAZ than plasma-cuts and minimizing the HAZ is recommended for ThoraSteel.
Use Existing Fixtures
Switching to ThoraSteel is seamless— substitute currently used tube with ThoraSteel – same outside dimension but thinner wall – and use your existing setup fixtures
